World Cup 2026 format: how the bracket works

The 2026 format is brand new: 48 teams instead of 32, and an extra round before the round of 16. Here's how it works:

  1. Group stage 12 groups of 4 teams — 72 matches total. Top 2 of each group + 8 best 3rd-placed teams advance (32 teams).
  2. Round of 32 16 single-elimination matches. Losers go home.
  3. Round of 16 8 matches to reach the quarter-finals.
  4. Quarter-finals 4 matches — winners go to the semi-finals.
  5. Semi-finals 2 matches that decide the finalists.
  6. Final Sunday July 19, 2026 at MetLife Stadium, New York. The world champion is crowned.
